A gas explosion in East Harlem injured over 20 people, with two dead. Witnesses say the buildings were destroyed at Park Avenue at E. 116th Street.

Metro-North service was suspended in both directions. Mayor de Blasio held a press conference at the scene in East Harlem, saying “It’s a tragedy of the worst kind because there was no indication”.

Officials have 250 firefighters fighting the Five Alarm blaze in both 5 story buildings. The explosion was said to be from a gas leak. The street is served by a low-pressure gas main.

There was no indications of foul play according to Mayor de Blasio.
